Harry Hummel, Executive director

Mr Harry Hummel studied Biology at the University of Groningen. He started working on human rights in 1972 at Amnesty International, as a local group member, as a member of the national board and as delegate in international meetings, and continued at Amnesty working in a range of different positions including Head of Campaigns, Senior Strategy Director and Acting Executive Director. In 2008 he worked as Executive Secretary of the first Human Rights Defenders Tulip, the Netherlands government award for outstanding and courageous human rights defenders.
Mr Hummel joined the NHC in January 2010 where he is responsible for overall policy, strategy development, human resource management, and for accountability for the work towards the Board. He also deals with external representation and advocacy. Among his priorities are the building of national and international human rights coalitions, aimed at increased effectiveness of civil society human rights campaigning, in particular at advocacy towards the OSCE and towards improvement of implementation of decisions of the European Human Rights Court.
He also works as an advisor for Bridging the Gulf - Foundation for Human Security in the Gulf region, a sister organization of the NHC. Bridging the Gulf is a foundation that aims at building human rights awareness and active citizenship in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Bridging the Gulf started in 2004 as a project of the NHC and the NHC continues to provide administrative, logistical and management support.
Kirsten Hawlitschek, Deputy director / Project manager

Ms Kirsten Hawlitschek studied Russian Studies at the University of Leiden. Her work experience rages from acquisition of projects in Eastern Europe for Tebodin Consultants and Engineers, through consultancy for Dutch companies on the Chinese market, to the management of projects for German development organisation GTZ on environmental policy advise for the Chinese government.
Ms Hawlitschek joined the NHC in 2006. She has managed projects in Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria and the Caucasus in the field of human rights litigation, prison reform, judges associations, prublic prosecution and legal aid.
She is currently responsible for the projects:
- Countering discrimination of women and children and promoting their rights by changing social and economic policies in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan (2011-2014)
- Establishment and management of EuroPris - European Organisation of Prison and Correctional Services (2011-2012)
Henk Hulshof, Project manager

Mr Henk Hulshof studied Slavonic Studies (MA) and Political Sciences (MA) at the University of Amsterdam. He has worked for the United Nations in Azerbaijan, Honduras, Ghana, and Guatemala as well as for the OSCE in Tajikistan.
Mr Hulshof joined the NHC in 2011 where his main task is developing new projects for marginalized groups such as women, children and economically deprived persons in Central Asia, Caucasus and Eastern Europe.
Julia Koster, Project manager

Ms Julia Koster studied Journalism at the Hogeschool Utrecht (BA) and Eastern European Studies (MA) including Serbian Language and Literature at the University of Amsterdam where she specialised in the political history of former Yugoslavia. She has worked as a freelance journalist for the Dutch media. She also worked as a project assistant for several governmental and non-governmental organisations in the Netherlands, Bosnia- Herzegovina and Serbia.
Ms Koster joined the NHC in 2005. She has managed projects in Estonia, Bulgaria, Serbia and Turkey, on various topics such as prison reform, anti-discrimination, transitional justice and anti-trafficking.
Ms Koster is currently responsible for the projects:
- Promotion of the Rights of Trafficked Persons in Serbia with Emphasis on Legal Support - A Human Rights-Based Approach (Serbia, 2010-2012)
- Harm Reduction in the Prison System Turkey (2010-2012)
- Institutions at Bay, Serbia (2008-2012)
Kamala Laghate, Project manager

Ms Kamala Laghate studied Polish Language and Literature in Amsterdam. Currently she is studying Business Studies at the University of Amsterdam. She has worked as an assistant Bilateral Programmes at the Netherlands Embassy in Warsaw, where her main task was managing the Matra/ KAP programme for Poland and Belarus.
Ms Laghate joined the NHC in 2004. She has managed a project on establishing a digital war crimes database in Croatia as well as various projects which aimed at training lawyers and judges from Central and Eastern Europe including South Caucasus on the European Convention of Human Rights.
Ms Laghate is currently responsible for the project:
- A Coordinated Civil Society Campaign for Fundamental Rights in Central Asia ( Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, 2011-2013)
Emma Oosten, Project manager

Ms Emma Oosten studied Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies (BA) and Conflict Management (MA) at the Radboud University Nijmegen. She specialized in civil society building in Eastern Europe. Ms. Oosten has worked for the Radboud University and for several non-profit organizations.
Ms Oosten joined the NHC in 2008. She has managed projects in various countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Egypt, Iraq, Romania and Turkey.
Ms Oosten is currently responsible for the projects:
- Executive editor of Security and Human Rights, Formerly Helsinki Monitor
- Participation of non-governmental organizations to the legislative process in the parliament (Grand Assembly of Turkey) (2011-2012)
- Strengthening the regulatory capacity of the General Directorate for Legislation of the Turkish Ministry of Justice (2011-2012)
- Creating a National Integrated Rehabilitation System for Drug Addicted Offenders in Romania(2010-2012)
- Strengthening the Iraqi national penitentiary system in line with the international and European standards (2010-2012)
Barbora Pomsarova, Project manager

Ms Barbora Pomsarova studied Dutch Language and Culture at the Faculty of Philosophy of Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. With a research scholarship she studied Dutch Literature at Utrecht University. After working as a project manager for an international event organizer, she worked for the Institute for International Research where she organized conferences and developed training programmes. Ms Pomsarova joined the NHC in September 2009. She has managed projects for the prison service in Turkey and Macedonia.
Ms Pomsarova is currently responsible for the projects:
- Work and Education in the Prison System Turkey (2009-2012)
- Harm Reduction in the Prison System Turkey (2010-2012)
Carla Huisman, Financial officer

Mrs Carla Huisman studied Accounting (SPD1/ SPD2) and worked as an administrator and financial manager for various profit and non-profit organizations. She is keen on working in organizations with idealistic goals.
Mrs Huisman joined the NHC in 2008. She is responsible for the financial administration of the NHC and Bridging the Gulf.
Lilian Hiemstra, Office manager

Ms Lilian Hiemstra studied Accountancy. She has experience in finances, the medical and catering industry. She is flexible and able to perform multiple tasks and to manage potentially stressful situations.
Ms Hiemastra joined the NHC in 2011. Besides office management, she also provides assistance in several projects of Bridging the Gulf.
Ms Hiemstra is currently responsible for the following projects:
- Women Participation in the Judiciary of Kuwait (part 2) - Study visit to The Netherlands (2011-2012)
- Building the capacity of civil society to promote human rights in the Gulf Cooperation Council states (2010-2012)
Johanneke van den Bos, Project assistant

Mrs Johanneke van den Bos studied Languages and Cultures of the Middle East at the University of Groningen (MA) and Romance Languages (BA) and Cultures and Arabic (BA). She specialized in languages and sociolinguistics of North Africa. She worked for the North Africa and Middle East department of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and as a project assistant for Bridging the Gulf.
Mrs Van den Bos joined the NHC in 2011 and is currently working as an assistant within the following projects:
- A Coordinated Civil Society Campaign for Fundamental Rights in Central Asia ( Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, 2011-2013)
- HDIM NHC side event and OSCE civil society parallel conference (2011)
