Adri Kemps studied political science and holds an MSc from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. He had different management functions at non-governmental organisations in the field of development cooperation and human rights in Central America and Europe. The organisations he has worked for include: SNV, Netherlands Development Organization and Amnesty International Netherlands.

Between 2004-2014 he supervised NGOs in the function of Executive Director of the Centraal Bureau Fondsenwerving (CBF) and as the Secretary-General of the International Committee on Fundraising Organizations (ICFO); the international association that monitors the fundraising of organisations. Furthermore, he has participated at the Advanced Management Program at Nyenrode Business Universiteit in the Netherlands.

Adri Kemps has written articles on various topics including civil society, human rights, good governance, international cooperation and fundraising.
