Supporting a vibrant civil society in Europe
Associação Veredas da Estrela
veredasdaestrela.ptVeredas da Estrela is a community-based non-profit association founded after the 2022 wildfires that destroyed 25% of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park in central Portugal. The association works from the mountain villages of Figueiró da Serra and Freixo da Serra to restore and protect local ecosystems, making them more diverse and resilient to forest fires. Veredas da Estrela believes that only living communities that incorporate participatory practices can be guardians of living ecosystems. Therefore, they bring together people of all ages and backgrounds in a shared learning process, encouraging participatory practices that strengthen community bonds. Veredas da Estrela’s goal is to build thriving villages and living landscapes that serve as examples of sustainability for others.
About the Project
Five Mountain Seasons – Learnings from the Past and Present for a Common Future in Serra da Estrela
Veredas da Estrela is located on the northwest slope of Serra da Estrela, an area threatened by societal changes and climate change, such as the 2022 forest fires. Subsequent government initiatives ignored proper public participation and greatly limited community influence. The project sought to create a space for open debate and involve diverse groups of residents in planning a sustainable future. It was carried out in five stages, including a digital campaign, local informational sessions, and debates that increased local knowledge and integrated community solutions. The project also included an exhibition titled Histórias de 5 Estações Serranas and an audio piece about the Azibrais Mine, both of which raised awareness of historical and current issues in the region.
