Catalyst of Change
Supporting a vibrant civil society in Europe
Bankwatch
bankwatch.roBankwatch Romania is a non-governmental organisation founded in 2012 that prevents the negative environmental and social impact of public and private projects and promotes sustainable alternatives by involving the public in decision-making. Its vision is a fair and sustainable transformation of the energy system, in which fossil fuels are phased out, and renewable energy and energy efficiency take their place, in an inclusive and participatory process. The goal is a just transition, in line with the needs of affected communities and the environment.
About the Project
EcoDialog: Strategic communication platform for environmental protection
Environmental organisations in Romania are facing a shrinking civic space and diminishing public concern for environmental protection, exacerbated by recent crises and populist rhetoric. The right of access to justice for these NGOs, as per the Aarhus Convention, has been undermined, with changes like shortened deadlines for challenging decisions and threats of financial liability for losing cases. There is a significant power imbalance, as decision-makers wield state support while attacking NGOs’ credibility. Media coverage often prioritises economic growth over environmental concerns, neglecting balanced reporting on these issues. This project aims to enhance journalists’ understanding of environmental protections and the role of NGOs, promote strategic communication within these organisations, and improve media coverage through workshops and resources.
