Supporting a vibrant civil society in Europe
Campaigns and Activism for Animals in Industry (CAAI)
caai.bgCAAI (Campaigns and Activism for Animals in the Industry) is a women-led civil society organisation driving change for animal protection in Bulgaria. Its mission is to end systemic animal suffering through advocacy, legislation and public awareness. Over eight years, it has closed the last mink fur farm, secured a national ban on mink breeding and import, and ended animal testing in two university disciplines. The organisation works to stop industrial megafarms, strengthen legal protections, and promote sustainable food systems.
About the Project
Stop Megafarms: Too Much Risk in One Place
This project addresses the threats of industrial animal farming to animal welfare, public health and the environment. A key example is the Debelets poultry farm, which confines over 550,000 hens and plans to expand amid illegal construction and political pressure. CAAI implements a professional communication strategy to raise awareness, mobilise citizens and pressure institutions to enforce EU standards. Project activities include a dedicated campaign website with videos and science-based information, social media and media outreach, petitions, expert articles, online discussions and public debates. The team also prepares legal complaints to challenge the farm’s expansion. These actions strengthen civic engagement, build national coalitions and promote accountability, environmental justice and democratic values.
