Centar 21
varuhinjerek.siCultural and artistic society Centar 21 works at the intersection of art, social engagement, and environmental protection. Since its conception, the center has developed projects in theatre, music, visual, video, and educational arts. From 2021, Centar 21 also focuses on environmental issues, and particularly the protection of inland waters. Each summer, it organises around 100 events in Slovenia and abroad. Through innovative artistic approaches, Centar 21 raises awareness of social challenges, empowers communities, supports women’s rights, and builds a connected, inclusive society.
About the Project
Guardians of the River: Guardians of the Future
This project responds to low public awareness and limited civil society participation in environmental protection, especially the protection of inland waters in Slovenia. Weak enforcement of environmental laws and low political will often exclude citizens from decision making. The project strengthens the visibility and capacity of local environmental advocates, with a focus on women. Activities include a photo series and exhibition about advocates from the Mura River, a university round table with students who develop communication ideas, creative workshops that produce visual messages on recycled clothing and a public fashion show, and training on media and legal procedures. These activities increase awareness, improve communication skills and strengthen support for environmental initiatives.
