Romania

Funky Citizens promote active citizenship, good governance, and media literacy in Romania. The organisation empowers young people and communities to influence public decision-making through research-based online tools, data-driven advocacy, and civic education. It trains networks of activists, journalists, and NGO representatives to increase transparency and accountability in public institutions. By combining technology, evidence, and public engagement, Funky Citizens enables citizens to see the impact of their participation, build civic skills, and challenge the status quo. Funky Citizens’ work strengthens democratic practices and fosters a more informed, responsible, and participatory society.

About the Project

Under the Microscope: Vigilant Communities Monitor Local Investments

This project focused on preventing the misuse of direct procurement practices in Romania, which allow public funds to be contracted with limited transparency, often leading to corruption. Funky Citizens selected and trained four former participants to carry out this work. The training began with a kick-off meeting that included methodology training and planning sessions to ensure effective monitoring. As part of the project, nine local investment projects were analyzed to identify or prevent potential cases of corruption. The results were disseminated through 7 press articles focusing on separate localities. Finished reports with analysis conclusions were then emailed to nine respective city halls.
