Supporting a vibrant civil society in Europe
Independent Midwives Association (AMI)
moasele.roThe Independent Midwives Association (AMI) stands by women in their choices regarding their own bodies. For the past ten years, AMI has supported women, mothers, children, and families, both from Romania and refugees from Ukraine. The organisation is dedicated to improving access to midwifery care for women and families in Romania and to strengthening and promoting the midwifery profession, actively contributing to the health and well-being of the community. With professionalism, empathy, and perseverance, it builds a network of trust and support for each woman at key moments in her life. AMI's mission is to ensure that the most vulnerable persons are prioritised in accessing the care they need.
About the Project
Safe Motherhood for all Women
In Romania, maternal health issues are rarely discussed, and obstetric violence remains largely unacknowledged. To address this problem, the project aimed to create space for discussion by raising public awareness about the quality of maternal care and the rise of obstetric violence in the country. An online questionnaire and a public report helped women recognise and name experiences of obstetric abuse while also attracting significant attention. The report was widely disseminated through a press conference attended by key stakeholders, including embassy representatives. AMI also engaged in legislative advocacy by developing a formal proposal to recognise obstetric violence as a form of gender-based violence.
Communication Outputs
Media Coverage
AMI received very extensive media coverage from national and local newspapers and radio stations following the launch of its report on obstetric violence.
