Catalyst of Change
Supporting a vibrant civil society in Europe
Ona Ve
onave.siThe ONA VE Association is a non-profit organisation in Slovenia that works to increase women's presence and visibility in the media and at national public events. It is building a community of more than 500 women who advocate for equality and actively promote it in public debate. Considering that fewer women in the media make achieving gender equality more difficult, ONA VE brings this issue to the forefront and raises public awareness about it. The association trains and supports female experts for public appearances, encourages gender-balanced representation in the media and aims for a 50–50 ratio so women are no longer absent from expert panels.
About the Project
Raising Awareness of Gender Representation and Role in Slovenian Media and Society
The project focused on the problem of low and unequal representation of women in the media in Slovenia. ONA VE’s goal was to contribute to increasing the appearance of women experts and challenge limited public perceptions of women’s roles in the media. The team delivered targeted workshops to journalists, carried out research, and expanded its network of women experts. It also ran a digital STEM campaign and opened an exhibition. Importantly, ONA VE signed a 50–50 commitment with RTV Slovenia. This commitment aims to increase the visibility of women, which contributes to gender equality in the media. It includes the use of gender sensitive language and inviting more women guests. The project led to better visibility of women experts and encouraged deeper reflection among journalists and editors.
