sos-rijeka.orgSOS Rijeka, founded in 1991, is the oldest association supporting victims of violence in Rijeka. It is a feminist, non-violent and non-governmental organisation that offers psychosocial, legal and other forms of help to adult victims of family violence. SOS Rijeka uses their experience and expertise for preventive and educational work and the promotion of positive social change. Its goals are to support victims, prevent violence and strengthen awareness of human rights while encouraging volunteering and active participation in the community.
About the Project
Advocating for Changes for Victims of Gender-Based Violence
SOS Rijeka’s project aimed to address the growing problem of gender based violence in Croatia, where weak policies and practices leave many women without proper protection. The organisation recognised the need to provide direct support while also working on change at a systematic and institutional level. Through this project, SOS Rijeka sought to increase awareness among decision makers, highlight uneven service distribution and draw attention to the patriarchal values present in institutions and the media. The team contributed to the National Plan for the Protection from Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, monitored legislation, took part in working groups, met stakeholders such as the ombudswoman, submitted recommendations and joined gender equality committees. The project strengthened advocacy efforts and improved dialogue on policies that protect women.
